South America might be best known for its majestic mountain ranges, vibrant cultures, and lush rainforests, but it also boasts fantastic beach destinations. Not only are the seaside towns in this part of the world stunning, but many are also pretty affordable. Some sandy spots, such as Colombia's Cartagena and Brazil's Rio de Janeiro, have been on the map for decades. Others, including Mar del Plata in Argentina, are still relatively under the radar for international visitors. No matter which of these areas you choose, you can enjoy an idyllic beach getaway without causing too much strain on your wallet!

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The soaring Christ the Redeemer might be Rio de Janeiro's most famous landmark, but its pristine beaches are just as impressive. Home to the instantly recognizable Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, Rio is as popular with beachgoers as it is with city break visitors. Like many major cities, Rio is among the more expensive pockets of Brazil. Yet, there's still plenty of value to be found here in comparison to many other beach hotspots in South America. Some neighborhoods come with a higher price than others, but the likes of Copacabana and Leme are right along the seafront and offer budget-friendly lodgings and eateries.

Cartagena, Colombia

While Rio de Janeiro is one of Brazil's costlier corners, the same can be said for the Colombian city of Cartagena. Even though other parts of the country are cheaper, Cartagena remains an ideal vacation spot for those with a modest budget. In addition to its lengthy beaches, Cartagena has an enchanting Old Town with colorful colonial streets and is within easy reach of many dreamy islands. The upscale Bocagrande area is noticeably pricier than other parts of the city, but sticking to the hip Getsemani or the low-key Marbella will allow your cash to go further.

Mancora, Peru

Peru is often overlooked as a beach destination in favor of other Latin American countries, but the Pacific Coast nation has some stellar coastlines. One such spot is Mancora in northern Peru, a hub for relaxation, surfing, and nightlife. With its blue skies, towering palm trees, and beachside accommodations, Mancora is a tropical paradise without the hefty price tag. There are a bunch of low-cost hotels and hostels for those on a shoestring budget, but even luxury stays are much less expensive than you'd expect. Similarly, tasty, cheap eats are super easy to come by, and it's also possible to tuck into upmarket meals without breaking the bank.

Mar del Plata, Argentina

It might be best known for Iguazú Falls, its superb hiking trails, and as the home of tango dancing, but Argentina has no shortage of top-tier beaches. Mar del Plata is among the most wallet-friendly spots in the country to soak up the sun and sea. Argentina is generally a pretty affordable travel destination. Still, prices in Mar de Plata tend to be lower than in more internationally acclaimed areas like Buenos Aires and Patagonia. La Perla is a great base for families, while Playa Grande affords visitors a slightly more swanky experience.

Viña del Mar, Chile

Similar to Argentina, Chile is typically revered for its world-class hiking trails rather than its beachfront towns. However, Viña del Mar, otherwise known as the Garden City, proves it's an incredibly underrated country for beach retreats. The highrise buildings lining the seafront make this resort city feel like a more moderately-priced alternative to Miami. Head further north, and you'll find the gorgeous Playa Renaca, which wouldn't look out of place in southern Italy! In essence, Viña del Mar offers terrific beaches and lively resort towns for a fraction of the price of its North American or European counterparts.

Santa Marta, Colombia

Swim in the Caribbean Seas without forking out on lavish resorts with a visit to Santa Marta in northern Colombia. This bustling port city is a gateway to Tayrona National Park, which encompasses some of the country's most picture-perfect beaches. Even though Santa Marta is inexpensive, keep in mind that there's a fee of roughly $20 to enter Tayrona National Park. Because the beaches within the confines of the park are the most scenic, it's worth visiting at least once during your trip. Alternatively, you can catch some rays at Pozos Colorados or Rodadero Beach for much less.

Praia de Pipa, Brazil

Praia de Pipa is one of Brazil's most beautiful areas, which is quite a statement considering how magnificent and diverse the country is. The rugged shores, surf-ready waves, and reasonable prices make it a fantastic choice for your next seaside sojourn. Its untouched beaches, striking cliffs, and powder-white sands have put Praia de Pipa on the map in recent years, yet it remains relatively quiet and affordable. Beach bums can kick back at one of the many waterfront lodgings, while adventurous travelers can join dolphin-spotting tours, learn to surf, or try their hand at sandboarding. Because it's slowly becoming more well-known, there's no guarantee that Praia de Pipa will stay this economical for long!

Montañita, Ecuador

Montañita is a tiny but exciting Ecuadorian town on the Santa Elena Peninsula. Although it's not quite as much of a hidden gem as it once was, its rustic vibe, thatched-roof buildings, and brightly colored streets are the epitome of laid-back living. As if all that wasn't reason enough to visit, the cost-efficient prices make it even more appealing for budget-conscious travelers. It's arguably not the cheapest beach destination on this list, but it still allows you to enjoy surfing, sunshine, and sand without splurging. The town's booming nightlife scene and adventure activities are sure to keep you entertained when you're not hitting the sand or catching the waves.
